Some of the best moves are never played!

Round 7 of the Olympiad yesterday proved very exciting, the highlights of which may be reviewed by watching this highlights video.  England especially performed heroics in beating the defending champions China, with Mickey Adams and Nigel Short showing that with age comes wisdom (sometimes!).  Short’s game in particular was a real roller coaster and can be seen near the end of the video.

What particularly interested me however was the following position.  Short (Black) has just taken a Knight on e5 with his f pawn which is a mistake but only if Li Chao (White) finds the masterstroke (and the one after that and the one after that!):-

Putting your unprotected Queen on a square that is attacked by no less than FIVE enemy pieces is truly wonderful!  Luckily for Short (and England), Li Chao played 34. Bxe7 and Short won ten moves later (although not without further thrills and spills).
