Beds County Championships - Bedford Chess Club

Bedford hosted round 2 of the county championships last week. The full results may be found here but one “reasonably decent game” (his words) was played by Steve:

One of the themes of this sort of position is who can push / wants to push their pawn to e4.}   16…e4 {? This, however, is not the moment and this is a blunder.}   17.Ne1 {Usually in this sort of set up white would go Ng5 then relocate it to h3 and f4. However, there is a good reason not to in this position … see in 2 moves time.}   17…d5 18.cxd5 cxd5 19.Nxe4    19…Qb8 ({The reason to go Ne1 before. If }Qxc2 20. Nxf6 {then after }gxf6 {my knight would have been en prise.})20.Nxf6+ Nxf6 {Having now won a key central pawn for 'nothing' I assumed this would be fairly straightforward to win but it's not as simple (or I certainly didn't make it simple anyway ) Kevin has nothing to lose and proceeds to point as many bits as he can at my king whilst I didn't really come up with much of a plan for a while.}   21.Qd3 Bd6 22.Rc2 Bc8 23.Rdc1 g6 24.Qe2 Bf5 25.Nd3 h5 26.Rd2 h4 27.Nf4 hxg3 28.hxg3 Kg7 {Was beginning to get a bit worried at this point … a Ne4, a Rh8 and/or an opportune g5 and there's a lot of pieces lurking near my king and not many protecting it. I wanted to get my Q off the e file so was looking at Qf1 but then a plan came to mind ….}   29.Qxa6 Rh8 30.Rc6 Bc7 31.Rxf6 {! … quite pleased to see that Fritz likes this move as well.}   31…Kxf6 32.Nxd5+ Kg7 33.Ne7 {and now it is suddenly most of white's pieces that are on nice squares, especially the 2 lovely bishops.}   33…Bc8 34.Qc4 Bb7 35.d5+ f6 {The last few moves were played fairly speedily but now we have reached the time control so I thought I would take stock and have a bit of a think but then a pretty immediate win appeared …}   36.Qg4 Kf7 37.Qe6+
