The fourth largest sporting event on the planet ….

…. started yesterday in Tromso, Norway – over 170 countries and 2,000 players are participating!

As England, Scotland and Wales are all competing in both the Open and Women’s events,  it is unclear why the British  Broadcasting Corporation feels this is unworthy of note.

Nevertheless, excellent coverage of the 41st Chess Olympiad may be found here

Bronstein was right!

As David Bronstein observed, “There is not a single true chess-player in the world whose heart does not beat faster at the mere sound of such long beloved and familiar words as ‘gambit games’ “.

This was certainly borne out by a most enjoyable evening for the fourteen players who attended the Gambits Summer Special last night.  Seven selected gambits were sampled, from the (relatively sedate) Evans, through the (suspect) Double Muzio  to the  (Absolutely Mad And Ridiculous?) AMAR.

The winning team were the “Backs to the wall” (you know who you are).  Many thanks to Steve Ledger for organising (and his brother for an interesting contribution).

Division II definitely sorted

The game Callum – Richard was played in Division II on Thursday night. It ended in a draw and the result means that Richard is the clear-cut Division Champion. Richard and Chris are therefore promoted to Division I.

Summer Curry 2014

As promised, I said I would try and sort out a Chess Club Summer Curry.

The proposed date is Thursday 14th August, at Saffron on Tavistock Street, say, 19:30 for 20:00 eat.

The last couple were pretty good nights, with 12-15 attendees, I believe.

Please let me know, either way, if you would like to come along on Thursday 14th and then Joe can book us in and get 50% off the bill with his bus pass or something.

Cheers, Steve.

Final Standings Division II

Gentlemen,

The game Saj – Richard was played in Division II on Thursday night. It ended in a draw and the result means that Richard is the Division Champion not withstanding three games still to be played.

With respect to these games, were they to be played then the worst case scenario for Richard would be:

Callum

1 – 0

Richard

Peter G

0 – 1

Saj

Saj

1 – 0

Mac

but even with this set of results, Chris would still finish second to Richard albeit by the smallest possible difference in SB-Score!

So I propose that the three outstanding games need not be played and for the purpose of completeness I shall adjudicate and record three draws though of course I will not submit these results for grading. If anyone is opposed to my decision please let me know.

Thursday Specials

Thanks to Alex for coming up with some fascinating endings, giving us a great evening last Thursday.  Next up is something I look forward to every year –  an evening of chess variants organised by Joe.  It always amazes me how much difference small rule changes make to the game.

Also last Thursday Richard and Saaj drew their outstanding Div 2 game and (subject to confirmation from Joe) this confirms Richard, in his first season back playing chess after several years, as Div 2 Champion. If so, congratulations Richard!

Peter

Division II – Just about sorted!

Saj defeated Gerry in Division II on Thursday night. The situation has thus clarified –Chris and Richard are promoted to Division I. However, the destination of the division trophy still needs to be determined. Therefore, it is thought best that of those still to be played, the game Saj – Richard should be played first. This was originally scheduled to be played on 24th July, but it is brought forward one week and now it should be played next Thursday 17th July. Saj and Richard, (also Peter G) please note.
