The win was much closer than the scoreline suggests, but the greater experience of our players eventually told.
Richard was first to finish. He got into a very passive position. His opponent had a strong king-side attack, and missed a possible winning line. This allowed Richard to swap off the major pieces and escape with a draw.
Steve took the initiative in his game, and had fun generating multiple threats. His opponent defended stubbornly, before losing his queen in some time pressure.
Paul recorded his first win of the season for the team. He took control from the start and soon won a pawn. He steadily ground out the win, which was never really in doubt.
Jack looked to be in line for his first loss for the team this season. He got into a very passive position, and his opponent established a central passed pawn which he manged to queen. However, in doing so, he overlooked a get-out check, which enabled Jack to force an unexpected check mate. This was such a surprise that one onlooker commiserated Jack for losing, before being corrected.
Mike had a slight initiative throughout, although his opponent had threats on the queen side. Mike steadily improved his position and won a pawn. His opponent got more and more tied down, had difficulty finding valid moves and eventually lost on time.
