This 6 round competition concluded on Sunday 10 May and was won jointly by Bedford’s Steve Ledger (apparently for the 14th time) and Gary Kenworthy of Leighton Buzzard who both scored 5 points out of 6.
The tournament started in January with the first 4 rounds at different clubs in the county and culminated with the final 2 rounds on the same day at Open University. This year was the highest number of participants for many years (36) with 13 from Bedford and as usual was fiercely competitive and excellently controlled by Thomas Evans.
The day started with a minute’s silence to remember Andrew Perkins and Andrew Pye.
At the end of round 5, there were 4 players on 4/5, messrs Ledger v Bodily and Kenworthy v Bowler. After 2 very tight games, Ledger & Kenworthy prevailed and so shared the title.
A fair result as both started well and hence played the highest achieving opponents throughout, Steve’s other opponents included Kenworthy (joint winner) Adrian Elwin & Jack Hale (joint third) and Andrew Bowler (joint sixth) as well as Rob Walker for the 3rd time in 4 years.
Steve’s round 2 game v Jack Hale was as follows :-
