Richard McMorran was made to work hard for his point by Doug, who put up a strong fight.
Alex’s poor run of form continued as Rishik powered his way to victory.
I was up against Jacob Hotten, making his debut at this level. The difference in approach between us was most noticeable in the time used – he moved very quickly, whereas I was ponderous as usual. I had a small advantage with a king-side attack, but Jacob defended well and I was unable to break through. He then tried an unsound tactic to break out, but it failed and lost a piece and consequently the game.
James had the advantage against Callum, but was unable to make it count, and he finally accepted a draw.
This left the top board to decide the match. Steve held the initiative throughout and eventually managed to break though to win material and the game.
