Bedford club players performed well in the first round of the Bedfordshire Individual Championship, hosted by the Bedford club last Thursday:-
- Paul Habershon’s Grand Prix Attack proved too sharp for Peter Rawcliffe
- Ben Pike gave his father’s flaky Spanish Gambit too much respect and dropped a knight in the opening
- Steve Ledger and Brian Valentine fought out a long draw
- Jan Laming earned a heroic half point against county captain Kevin Williamson, taking him all the way to an opposite coloured bishops endgame
- Gerry Nolan lost in a sharp tactical struggle with Richard Freeman, an (arguably speculative) exchange sacrifice proving decisive
- Marc Obi’s game against Karthik Ramesh was postponed until next week
